Botany Department

SCOPE AND IMPORTANCE

VISION

Our vision is to disseminate the knowledge of biological science especially in plant science and conducts innovative research, teachings and outreach on the patterns and process of life with a focus on pant and their environment.

MISSION STATEMENT

We focus on nature, student knowledge to predict and understand the mysteries of life form. Our mission is to cultivate the potential students to serve the people by scientific way and to facilitate their life.

AIM OF THE DEPARTMENT

  • To achieve academic excellence in basic and applied aspects of plant sciences.
  • To impart basic and advanced education to students through teaching, learning, research and evaluation.
  • To motivate the students to undertake research in basic and applied thrust areas of plant sciences.
  • To inculcate scientific awareness towards protecting diversity and eco-environmental management of plant resources for sustainable development.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

  • Teaching of basic plant science and researching through traditional disciplines such as plant morphology, anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, genetics, ecology and mycology.
  • Student will learn the importance of plant identification in science.
  • Students will participate in plant identification using observation skills.
  • To achieve academic excellence in basic and applied botany

Scope of the subject

After completing graduation, student can appear for various competitive examinations like Indian Forest Services, Indian Administrative Services conducted by UPSC. He/she can also go for higher courses like M.Sc (Botany), M.Sc (Biotechnology), M.Sc. (Molecular Biology), and M.Sc. (Genetics). Amongst the careers available to a person who enjoys outdoors are positions as an ecologist, taxonomist, conservationist, and forester. Person with mathematical background may find biophysics, genetics, and developmental biology to be exciting fields. Someone with an interest in chemistry might become a plant physiologist, plant biochemist, molecular biologist or chemotaxonomies. Student can also choose biotechnology, microbiology, mycology and phycology. Student can also opt for ornamental horticulture and landscape design. Student can obtain specialization in plant breeding, plant pathology, agronomy, and horticulture. Teaching botany is challenging and rewarding career. Some botanist work in marketing or administration of plant related industries such as pharmaceutical companies, seed companies, biotechnology firms, scientific publishers and biological supply houses. Other plant biologists work in museums, herbaria and botanical gardens. Some with additional training can be scientific writers, computer programmers and botanical illustrators.

Introduction of department

HISTROY

The Department of Botany, established in 1999, is one of the leading Departments of college in the field of teaching in plant sciences. Science faculty was started in June, 1999 in this institution. Initially there was only B.Sc. F Y. The work load was just sufficient for one person, Mr. S.B. Jige was appointed as lecturer in this department. This was the first appointment in the department. In June, 2000 the institution decided to expand the faculty hence the B. Sc. Second year and third year classes were opened. In response to the increased works load, Dr. Datta Chamle and Mr.. S. B. Pawar was appointed on 17 July, 2009.

In the field of research so far the Department has succeeded in pulling major resources from funding agenesis like UGC to promote research activity like FDP and Minor research project.
